  4. How odd, just yesterday I was playing around with encrypting my USB drives, and now this. Hmm. Anyway, for those who are disappointed with the USBCrypt being pulled, two excellent freeware alternatives are http://www.truecrypt.com and http://www.freeotfe.com.

I’ve been using TrueCrypt for years, but it has a limitation (according to USBCrypt’s web page, they also have it) that you need to be running as administrator. I’m now looking at FreeOTFE because apparently they don’t have this limitation (though I haven’t confirmed that yet myself).

  9. The company I work for ran into similar issues where we needed a USB drive that was “affordable” and could be encrypted by basic users (no admin privileges). We were looking at purchasing $100 plus hardware options until we came across drives by a company called DiskGo. BUT only the most current hardware version of the Secure Guardian model actually has this ability. For less than half the cost of the others we looked at (Sandisks if I remember correctly) they are a much more affordable option.

I never found a Software encryption (that can be added to ANY USB drive) that did not require admin privileges.

  10. Didn’t have any issues with the activation of this on a windows 7 machine.

Not clear but you can form virtual drives that are smaller than the disc they go on (this leaves all the other files intact). Worries me a bit that these partitions /files don’t appear to be back-up-able (when they move the USB crypt software doesn’t open them anymore).

Peculiar error message in use trying to write a file back onto the encrypted drive – “Disc drive not closed or no disc in drive” only seems to happen when writing back a large file size (publisher document) ; works fine with smaller files . It will accept the file back from outside the encrypted area.

If you want a collection of encrypted directories it becomes a bit messy.. small sizes (5GB) formed but then didn’t seem to want to accept files (is the encyption done in a large portion of the encrypted area?)

  11. Hey Guys… the 64-bit version worked just fine on my Windows 7 64-bit system. I’ve since encrypted ALL my USB drives and they all work flawlessly on other systems.

  12. It registered on XP pro easily , I still have it , I only had two to do and it did the job . I know it must be hard to keep pulling rabbits out of hats when it comes to presenting soft ware for free .I have only seen a few times that soft ware was not worth down loading , Thank you to the staff at Give away of the day . Great site and has been up for a long time. To bad you have run out of games , I did at one time have almost 200 games on my hard drive from here . I have a few left but lost them all in a crash . Here is wishing you and the staff the very best .

  13. Dont like USBCrypt.

Use FlashCrypt and AxCrypt which are robust and free.

  14. Looking over this topic it bothers me that one of only 365 slots per year would be pulled and re-allocated to a product/offering that fails to activate properly. Unless it is a problem strictly due to GAOTD on this specific case, it indicates that the publisher did not do their homework and/or proper testing. There are already too many functionally redundant apps (how many YouTube downloaders a year do we really need?), to waste one of these slots on known questionable software. Especially when (according to the comments), the problem is not that widespread.

If you do insist on re-offering the SW, at least make it a dual offering for that day so it doesn’t displace a first time offering.
