Stickr: IE problem fixed, features added

Hello everyone,
Thank you for a huge amount of feedback on Stickr feature, our partners will continue to improve it according to your comments.
The problem with IE has been noted and fixed, also, they added two features, one of which is already available, registered users’ sticker will have higher priority and sorted by user votes and author’s karma. Another feature which will be available tomorrow is a new window that will open on “what’s this” link click. This window will provide fast access to Stickr integration options and Stickr help.

Yours,
GOTD team

  1. Any option to switch it off without having to use in-private or or security zones or no-script etc? I don’t like having to use such sledghammers to squash an unwanted feature if the features developers can listen to the high number of people that found the feature undesirable and realised the end users rights should be respected and a way to prevent loading all the feature and user generated dross be integrated into the feature.

  2. Sounds like you guys are ignoring all the requests for a way to disable Stickr. I’m just glad that my existing security measures prevent the thing from running so I can keep participating in this site. I absolutely hate intrusive animated windows and the like. Maybe the current fascination is that it earns the site money, but I hope you don’t drive away a large amount of the site’s fans.

  3. I do not like it at all as it slows down the website!

  4. HI!
No ignoring, guys, we already transfered the request to our partners to make it disablable in sticker itself, so if will be available really soon we hope.

  5. If used properly, it could be a great help. But I assume there will be lots of mis-use too. If not used often, would be a great help when something we need to notice is posted with them. They are with me, so far.

  7. Anyone not wanting this loathsome add-on can get rid of it by adding “stickr.com” to their HOSTS file. You will have to restart your browser to get relief.

I use a free utility called “AddBin.” http://www.jgilmore.com/adbin/Index.htm
This brings up a convenient interface and starts you off with a bunch of ad sites. Adding a new unwanted site is a snap, and the list is always sorted.

  10. The bigger question is should this even be used on this site at all.
Seems alot-most folks are going to block it however they can.
Doesn’t that kinda give you the subtle hint that even if you put it
here no one will see or use it ?

  11. Ok, ok, ok….The stickr thang…Come on GOTD Team, lets get rid of this useless thing or have the developers include a way to switch it off. Please terminate its use until they do. Reason #1 – Just a few minutes ago, my 8 year old son was sitting at the computer with me while I was checking out Dec. 19th GOTD, SpellQuizzer. I had to leave for a few seconds and when I had returned my son had navigated the mouse to rollover the Stickr tab which had brought up 3 notes. The one note had simply displayed the word F _ _ K, which he could clearly pronounce as he asked me what it meant. So if this uncensored, filthy garbaged can so easily be displayed on ones’ computer screen, then anything written out may also be sent. This would make this site inappropiate for young users. I am disgusted with GOTD inability to remove this unwanted feature for I can see no real purpose in it. Please heed the thoughts of your subscribers. Thank you. GG

  12. ok, my last post reporting a problem with stickr was last chance if you wish to moderate out all further constructive criticisims then stickr is going to be disabled using security measures so the rest of the site returns to normal operations without having stickr code hijacking standard features like the right click menu on selected text.

  13. Stickr?! Why, its useless. You already have comments, just why. Did it look like a cool or trendy thing to do. Wanted to slow down your site on purpose, and extra bandwith? Its even poorly implemented, an annoying distraction that covers up letters and words on lower resolution screens.

Please get rid of the moronic software. If you thought it would make you money or draw in more people it won’t. Really.

Adblock Plus also works wonders to get rid of annoying things like this.

  14. @7 This hosts file blocks more sites if you’re interested:
    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

I manually added this stickr domain and it works perfectly!

  16. Another vote to get rid of stickr and a voice asking what possible use can “Stickr” be? Who would buy this?

  17. If Sticker would be used properly it could be a really nice feature. Unfortunately, there are nothing but childish persons using it to get attention. I hate it!!!!!!!!!!! It definitely does not belong on GAOTD! I ahould think that this site of all sites should recognize
how bad a program this is!!!!

  18. I’m already blocking stickr (aka stinkr?) so it will be unlikely that I will notice when it behaves well enough to invite back into my life. The two straws that broke the back of this camel were:
    1) The random screens full of yellow post-its that would seemingly appear out of nowhere while I was mousing around the screen and apparently getting too close to Area 51. There’s nothing like clicking close window x’s of 20 unwanted post-its to endear one to a product.
    2) Every time I hit the page down key I would be sent to the bottom of the whole darned comment page instead of to the next screen down.
I create enough little pieces of paper with mindless drivel all by myself, thank you. I don’t need more supplied virtually, nor do I need any applications randomly reassigning keys.
I just checked and saw that you can turn off the UFO, I mean autoshow, feature, and, right now anyway, my PageDown button is behaving itself. Unfortunately, my system uses my TV for a monitor and in order to read it I need to zoom in quite a bit if I’m gonna lean back and be comfy while I surf. That means that the stickr doohickey on the edge of the screen is barely visible peeking up from the bottom and refuses to be dragged anywhere. In order to see the buttons I need to zoom out to get it on screen, and then it’s too small to see from a distance. So far it’s all moot since I haven’t seen any stickr notes yet worth reading and I have no idea why anybody would write anything worth reading there anyway. Maybe I’m missing the big picture because I’m zoomed in so far…..
Anyway, I’m turning it back off again for now. (Firefox 3.5, Adblock Plus)

  20. I have been a loyal fan of this site for a very long time and have done my best to spread the word about it. That will end if the stickr can’t be removed. I’ve read all of the comments posted by my fellow-subscribers on this matter and I honestly don’t understand why you continue to run the thing. People are taking harsh measures to block it and have said so here.

I will simply end my subscription here, not return, and tell all of my friends why. One man may mean nothing to you but keep in mind that this is the tech age and word of mouth makes a huge difference.

Please remove this offending program before you lose people.

  21. So how much does stickr pay you to let them make an abysmal mess of your site?

    Get rid of it.

    That’s all.

  23. Ahhh well, I was going to say………….
but 21 others have beaten me to it.
    It IS REALLY annoying guys.

  24. I liked the program but now see what others are saying it can be a big drag if you are in a hurry and say you have 2 min’s to download the free program of the day before it hits midnite and you have to click off 20 of these notes :( Sorry guys and gals I will not use it any more
    Frank

  25. Just remove:

    var YouSticker={
    hash:”26e61ae981d5893c4265651aedc5d409″,
    site:”stickr.com”,
    applicationName:”gothd”,
    position:”left”,
    color:”#cadde6″,
    text_color:”#785b5b”,
    logo: “http://stickr.com/design/images/slider/bg_logo_05.png”
    }
    var url = ‘http://’ + YouSticker.site + ‘/load/button/?sUrl=’ + encodeURIComponent(window.location) + ‘&gHash=’ + YouSticker.hash;
    document.write(unescape(“%3Cscript src='”) + url + unescape(“‘ type=’text/javascript’%3E%3C/script%3E”));

and stickr will be gone forever.

  29. For those of you that missed this on another thread ….

Here’s how to effectively block Stickr from your browser. Doesn’t matter what browser that you use.

1.Go to your HOSTS file which is located at:
For XP, Vista and Windows 7 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
    For Windows 2k C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
For Windows 98 and ME C:\WINDOWS

    2. Open HOSTS file with Notepad. (Be sure to make a copy of the file before you edit in case you make an error.)

The default Windows HOSTS file looks something like this:
    ______________________

    # Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a “#” symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
    #
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    _____________________________

    3. Directly under the line that says 127.0.0.1 Localhost, you will want to type:

    127.0.0.1 stickr.com

    4. Close Notepad and answer “Yes” when prompted.

    5. Reboot your computer and go to the GAOTD Site. You will find that you’re free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty … Stickr is Gone!

Again … Thank you rezidue for lighting my path!

  30. @27 Packett,

Thanks for the detailed instruction on how to modify the host file with notepad and eliminate Stickr. The only problem I’m having is that for some reason Windows Vista won’t let me save/overwrite the host file. I get an error stating:

“Cannot create the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file. – Please make sure the path and file name are correct.”

Obviously the path and file are there (I opened it, after all), so any ideas as to why I’m being rejected?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to getting this annoying piece of garbage off my GAOTD page!!!

    Regards,
    Steve

  32. Figured out the solution to my problem … needed to give “edit/write” permissions to my user … thought that because it was an “administrator” account it already had this permission, but turned out it didn’t.

Now, after a reboot, I am happily free of annoying “Stickr,” and good riddance!!!

Comment by Planecrazy — January 21st, 2010 at 9:43 am
  33. We SHOULDN’T have to alter our computers nor download addons/plugins to get rid of the stickr feature.

GOTD needs to disable and remove it from there site.

It’s time they respond and quit ignoring those that are here.

If you truly care about members here and those here to support GOTD you would step up and deal with this in my opinion.

I’ve already had several people that I’ve referred here in the past tell me that they are very disappointed in the lack of response and ongoing problems occurring with the site….many have said they will not return.

  34. Followed instructions by Packett. Ran into the same problem Planecrazy ran into, being unable to save the HOST file. Can not figure how to add permissions to users to edit/write. Appreciate some help.

Been working on this for about two hours. This “stickr” is infuriating!
