  1. I have downloaded the current AVGfree from the internet. If you just google it you will find it. I assume this is the same version of was it a full version? Anyway I have been using AVG for years now and it has recieved excellent reviews and I have had no issues with it whatsoever. I recommend it to friends and enemies. I found Comodo slowed my system down as did Norton. Indepent surveys I’ve read put it at the top of the free antivirus programs so I’m sticking with it. I also run A2 and ad-aware alongside so I don’t have any naughties Check out No:7 Joe’s link I think you’ll find it is V.9 and it’s OK.

  2. I have been using avg for years and never had a problem nor have i ever had a virus infection…. avg has caught every suspect file before they were able to spread their effects…. I would like to try the pro version though…. i hope gotd can get it online soon….
    great job, great software gotd!!!!!

  3. I’ve used both Avast! and AVG for years. Basically if the machine is 1.0 GHZ or faster I go with AVAST! and if slower I go with AVG since AVG has always seemed to run better on the slower machines. I like the AVAST! interface much better however.

In terms of virus catching and rescue, I’ve had similar success with both products. Too bad EITHER vendor won’t allow the free version on home based server platforms not in a commercial environment.

  4. @Terry R.

That’s because back then, AVG was the “king of the AV Products”. Now, it sucks like crazy… :( but they did improve a little bit. :D

  5. I love your site. I am 72 and on ss so am limited on what I can get. I would never have any of these programs if it wasn’t for you. Thank you very very much. I tell everyone about it when they need software. I only download what I think is interesting or that I might want to do something with. I love my computer and love to learn. Thanks again. You rock. M Morgan

  6. Oh well. After switching from AVG Free to Panda Cloud Anti-Virus, I will NEVER go back!

  7. Has anyone who downloaded it worked out how to switch it off? (That is a serious request for information, not just a dig at the software.) I was unlucky enough to get in early enough to download it, and it is the worst anti-virus software I have ever tried. It slows my computer down to a point that it is impossible to work on it for long. It asked, on set up, do I want to change my default search engine to Yahoo, I replied “no”, but it changed it anyway. Worst of all, it is viral adware itself, it has hijacked things like my 404 page, and throws up an advert instead (based on the 404, eg if a website called “bongo.com” fails I get an advert for a music site that sells bongos).

So if anyone knows how to switch the bloody thing off please post here, I want to be able to use my computer for more than an hour without having to reboot it!

  8. I used to be a huge supporter of avg, but in since 8.5 they have gotten sneaky on their upgrade path tricking many into purchasing their software. I work as an IT in a good sized nonprofit organization, and we have switched to Comodo`s free anti virus/firewall,for about 2 yrs now it has protected a public internet site of about 30 public computers plus the office ones, with no problems at all. I recommend Comodo to anyone looking for a good set of protection tools

  9. Many thanks to the GAOTD-Team for their fast reaction to the AVG flop. By the way, I think we all don’t blame YOU and your fine service… it’s not the first problem we had with AVG: The “juniors” working there don’t answer questions, their support (also for sold products) is lousy and their programs are disturbing and corrupting our systems ! These amateurs just don’t care about us users…

Also, many thanks to all the interesting and useful comments in this blog. Excellent community, indeed !!!

  10. I alrerady used avg have for years and it is what I put on customers computers,I have had no problems with it but then again I don’t go places known to be infecxted either and if it pops up and say the site me be infected I close it out,i started out in 89 with macaffee not very good, then norton until 2004,then it seemed to not be very good and slowed coputers down,I have tried the other free ones and since I work on computers on a daily basis i see where all of them have gotten viruses and the fake antiviruses seem to get in to all of them, trying the microsoft security antivirus now on one of my computers and it isn’t bad so far norton just seems ineffective and it just slows you computer down any more but the best antivirus is also a little common sense

  11. AVG antivirus is total rubbish, it misses more threats than any other antivirus out there, if anyone who has AVG installed try NOD32, Panda, Avast or any of the other top brand by doing a scan, you will be in for a shock at what is found on your system, I am a computer engineer and the machines that I get to clear viruses are mostly using AVG Free which does not detect them.

  12. I second many comments here. the best AV software is Avast, hands down.

  13. Ummm, hello everybody,

    Try Antivir, ABSOLUTELY the best

  14. AVG itself is a virus IMO. AVG 9.0 Free bombards me with adware for itself for a whole month, then sits idle for a while. When I put it on Win 7 it was blocking restore points and blocked system restore altogether. I had to system restore in safe mode. When I tried to remove it I had to download a cleaner from their sit to get rid of it. I went to Avast.

  15. Like many here I used to use AVG on my machines when they first hit the market, disk kindly provided by the company as they were one of our clients.
But, and it sounds uncharitable I know, the more recent versions seem to have lost something, I know different software finds different problems, some miss what others find, but in the end I found AVG was slowing my notebook and smaller machines too much.
I switched to Clamwin free, seems to do a good job but no on here has mentioned it, any other users? Comments on Clamwin?

  16. I used the paid-for version of AVG for years, until I finally lost it with their frequent FPs screwing with mine and others systems.

AVG would have to impress the hell out of me before I’d ever consider using them again – and that hasn’t happened this time, either.

  17. What are all you people talking about?
1.) AVG free (version 9) is readily available both from AVG and CNET (www.download.com)
    It is completely free and effective;

2.) “the FAKE AntiVirus Software Scam one – where the infected machine displays what looks like an A/V software alerting to an infection ”
I have seen this on several customers computers, running many different AV’s, including AVG, Avira, Avast, McAfee, and Norton.
This is not a virus, but malware; please learn the difference. Once you disable it, you can remove it with Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, etc.

3.)Avast and Avira are both good products as well. In fact, I install Avira on my customers who don’t have the memory to spare for AVG.
-Yes, AVG uses more memory than Avira, but it also has more features:
    Removable disk scanning
    E-mail scanning (several different clients)
    MS Office plugin
And the best one – the AVG toolbar. The toolbar is what makes it my first choice for customers computers. It won’t STOP a malicious site, but it will at least warn you much of the time for any known malicious sites.
When installing AVG, I do a custom install and uncheck e-mail and office features; most people use webmail and most of my customers don’t have the RAM for the office plugin.
But anytime I get a customer with a duo core processor and more than 2GB of ram (vista, 7) I let it do a default install.

I don’t know why everyone is hatin on AVG so bad – it’s pulled my butt and many of my customer’s butt’s out of the fire PLENTY of times.
It’s not a bad product. Don’t hate AVG because you don’t know how to configure it for your computer.

  18. Think I’ll just stick with Norton 360 then, even though my sub has just lapsed. Got the Comodo one (AV & Firewall) and AVG (Loved it when I was between Norton & Mcafee) but find the Comodo one highly annoying with all it’s pop ups every 5 seconds about sandboxing everything I glance at and it’s annoying habit of cutting off my kids networked pc’s from my router every hour or so, despite me setting everything up to stop it doing that at both router and pc level.

  19. @Grange

Norton 360 is useless, I hacked it in 5 mins flat. AVG free edition is much better :)

  20. For those who are advising avast instead of AVG, Avast is worth nothing. It slows down your pc because it takes all priority on your system when effecting a scan or an update.
For once, Microsoft offers a free antivirus and is very effective. All you need is a legal copy of windows and SP3 if you’re running XP. Use this one in combination with Spybot and your computer will be fully protected.
If you don’t like Microsoft products, you must use a Linux system, no antivirus needed and very powerful, but you need some computer knowledge.
If you prefer another antivirus who’s very effective, you will need to pay for it and buy NOD32.
If you’re satisfied with less, but reasonable quality, AVG is a very good choice, but remember, the best developper of antivirus systems will be the one who developped the operation system

  21. oh right, just another interesting note to add. People who are saying that AVG is slowing down the system, might first check if their previous antivirus is completly removed before installing it. Any trace of old AV software can cause a conflict and slowing down your machine and even make it completly crash.
This is the case for any AV software, you never can have two AV tools installed on the same machine. They are working against each other

  22. Used to have Avast free but one day they missed 3 virus which were picked up by another program that rocks: Super Anti Spyware.

So now I use that plus free AVG and of course the best friend a computer can have: Advanced System Care free version. Tried the pro version but it screwed up my registry so stick with the free.

  24. Only just looked at GOTD and noticed this AVG story. Read through some comments and would just like to say I’ve been using AVG 4ever and am now using AVG9 Full and it is fantastic..!! All the slaggings off are without merit and any parts of AVG that people don’t need or want can be configured (turned off) very easily. AVG 9 is an excellent software.

  25. I used AVG9 full for a while until I had fraud committed on my on line banking. Some body got through my security and drawed money out of my account. Who’s to blame? How did they get in? The bank won’t say and I’m not taking any chances I’ve always figured if it’s free…somewhere somehow some body is getting something?? Any how to each it’s own. I’m using McFee and I’m not saying it’s full proof but so far they are right in back my every movement and even ahesd of my every movement. It’s free for a year for three computers…so far I will renew when the time come.I received it through Bank Of America.
    Happy Browsing to all.
