Problems with giveaway timing -fixed!

Hello guys,

Yesterday (December, 20th) we encountered a problem with our server which resides in remote datacenter. This server was restarted by datacenter admins due to some database performance-related problems and the server time was changed upon restart. This, in turn, resulted in a giveaway being 5 hours shorter than usual ones. We are aware of this problem, and today’s (December, 21st) giveaway will last 24 hours as intended, even if it’s not showing correct timing at the moment.

We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience caused by these technical problems. Also, I’ll post an update once we fix the giveaway timing for the current giveaway.

Update: Giveaway timing fixed!

Ranking system fixed – thank you, guys!

Hello!

A few days ago we changed our rating system to thumbs up/down one. After a couple of days with the new system in place we were surprised and frustated by its results – having more negative votes than positive ones.
We thought that there are problems with the software we present you, but the strange thing was that more than 90% of comments were positive!
A lot of visitors didn’t even bother to download the products seeing those 60%-70% negative feedback…

We identified the source of problems two days ago, it was about the usability: lots of our visitors clicked the “thumbs down” button only to see if there are any negative comments, not to vote against the program! Strange, but while we were investigating possible problem sources we even didn’t think about it and become aware of the usability issue only thanks to our community members who reported their suspicions on the potential misunderstanding caused by our rating buttons placement. We finally knew what happened.

Thank you, guys! Yesterday we implemented the usability changes and we have voting results that are much closer to what we see in the comments – and now much more people download the products enjoying them, because now we get over 90% thumbs up votes which truly reflect the opinion of our users on the great software we select for them!

We also would like to explain the situation with new titles for our main site. Two weeks ago we found that we had reached daily audience enough to start offering you world-leading software titles. That was the day you saw the note at our main page first time. And that was the day we started negotiating with lots of companies about the giveaways. Unfortunately the big guys are tough to make quick decisions. That is the reason for negotiations are being in process and you still are waiting. Please, be patient – we are doing over best to give you branded titles as soon as possible!

Also if you know guys in such software companies please, tell them about our site – it’s really a good commercial and branding opportunity for them in this competitive world!

Welcome to the Project Team’s Blog!

Hello and welcome everyone! These days Project Giveaway of the Day becoming more and more popular within the Internet so we’ve decided that it’s time for our own blog. So, we’re proudly present to you the Giveaway of the Day Project Team blog.

This blog will be run by the creators of GAotD, our friends, helpers and partners. Here we’ll post everything new within the project – some new features and how they are working, answer to frequently asked questions (FAQs) and who knows whatever else.

The GAotD Project is very young (well, it’s about two mounth) but we’ve already been mentioned at Yahoo! Directory search (in the section New and Notable sites) and got some very good press about our initiative:

As a die-hard fan of all things free, I am so bookmarking this. It’s like found gold. — Rick Broida (Lifehacker)

Pretty cool idea, almost better than “Freeware” ‘Give-Away-Ware’ hmmm,…SWEET! – Commentary by thunder7(Lifehacker)

…Its surely worth a bookmark and I’ll keep tracking for updates through their RSS Feed. (TechBuzz)

The plan at Giveaway of the Day is to work with software publishers to offer fully-licensed versions of their software for free for one day as a promotional tool. Publishers gain the word of mouth advertising that comes from happy users acquiring a full license to their products, and Giveaway of the Day gets to be the ones offering the giveaways. And users get free software – so theoretically it’s a win-win-win situation. That’s not a bad plan! – Jason Clarke (DownloadSquad)

Thanks everyone for the warm words! Also we’d like to mention our friends form Italy at Geekissimo (who are making trackbaks on our giveaways daily) and all our visitors! We’ll try our best to bring to you as many world-wide known software products as it’s possible.

Stay tuned!
