Our freeware library is launched!

Happy New Year!

Here goes our present for you, dear visitors and members of Giveaway of the Day!
Today we launched a new project at giveawayoftheday.com: freeware library. We worked hard to make it handy and also to filter out all that disgusting adware/spyware that some developers call “free”.

This project seems to be a good addition to our site: missed some cool giveaway? Check out similar free software in our library using convenient tags. Don’t think today’s giveaway is useful for you? That’s sad, but check out today’s freeware updates, maybe you`ll like some of them?

Also I guess lots of freeware geeks we know for their comments (;-)) will try this toy to compare our giveaways and similar freeware stuff.

With Best Regards,
Victor

  1. Great concept, but why aren’t their links to other great freeware like Openoffice, cutepdf and vlc.

  2. Thank you for your question! We just launched this service and currently there are products by small developers mostly. We are going to add more decent freeware products to our library very soon, in 1-3 weeks.

  3. Man, give the guys a chance. It’s just started up for Christ sake. I’m sure all freeware that has been tested for malware, pop ups etc etc will be added as time goes by.

Thanks Victor and the Giveaway team, this is a brilliant idea.

I must admit, I’ve followed up most of the references people have made to other freeware programs including cutepdf (as mentioned above), which I personally didn’t think was as good as the one the team offered, but I’m sure that would be attacked by some, lol.

  4. Do I have to install it before midnight?

Does it only last a day?

j/k. Are these programs you guys made or someone else?

And why are they even listed? They aren’t give aways.

  5. oh and it doesn’t seem like you actually scan everything.

There are alot of files that are duplicated and I found a few that sounded like viruses and I found adware apps too.

Deskloops contains adware software bundled in called miva. Which is a desktop searching software.

Miva says they have changed but in the past they were a big adware company that ran findwhat.com

I would say that the software would be yellow flagged before installation.

  6. No, they don’t last only 24 hours and yes, the are not giveaways, but just freeware downloads available on the Internet. They are listed in that special section of our site just to give you some additional value from visitig us :-)

As for Deskloops thank you for your report – we will investigate it.

  7. OMG!

They already have hundreds of software links! I hope we can quickly sort through the rif-raff. Great job GOTD!

  9. Wow! Thanks!! Due to falling down and breaking my back in the process, I’ve been unable to bring in a lot of the green stuff everyone needs to buy software. You’ve no idea of how much I appreciate free stuff without having to beg for it . I wish y’all a very happy and PROFITABLE 2007 and beyond. Oh, and no, I wasn’t drunk at the time; I’m a stroke survivor and just lost my balance.

  10. Hundreds? Thousands! But do they take suggestions from users? Give us a link where we can suggest freeware we’ve tried and that needs to be shared. It doesn’t have to be made public, but there are a lot of us who regularly troll the internet for good free programs.

  12. Here is another download for you to add. No charge to download or use anytime I have found http://www.ca.com/unicenterdcc

  13. It’s nice of you Mel to leave a link, but it would be even cooler if you gave more information like what the software is called, what it does etc. I’m not whining; it’s just I’m a little dubious about unsolicited info like you,ve supplied with very little information. Thank you.

To The GoTD team; Would you accept the communities recommendations via this comment section, so that you can follow up the claims and check for safety. That would be really cool. It would probably ensure that your library will become the best on the world wide web, which is a fantastic prospect and achievement.

I’ve already downloaded some freeware that has been recommended by community members, but it’s always nice to know that someone has actually given the software a through check before it’s put on the site for download.

Thank you for all these brilliant software products that either you have arranged for us lucky people to get free within a day, and the growing list of Freeware titles without the hassle of having to clean your registry out despite having firewalls and other protection when visiting a lot of freeware sites.

And I echo Beverly Kurtin’s praise as I too broke my back in four places after being hit by a speeding car (50mph) while cycling to work. I was made redundant, and now have been forced to take very early retirement due to the injury, which went untreated for months due to the hospital sending me home with only a suspected sprain. The doctor who examined me had just started. They neglected to x-ray all my back, which led to the oversight and consequently my injuries were exacerbated. I lost two and a half inches and have a bad bend in my bac now that is treated with morphine due to the pain I get, (two of the fractures are unstable). So these software offers are fantastic for me as otherwise I would never be able to afford them. (I will eventually get compensation though, but in the meantime, this is brilliant. It’s also become one of the highlights of my day. (sad maybe, but it really does cheer me up) Thank you so much

  19. really good website , thank you

  20. I would be grateful if you could let me know the licence implications for educational establishments. As they are ‘non-commercial’ can the software be installed on a school network?

  21. There is also addtional dangerous software listed in the Freeware directory

    http://giveawayoftheday.com/freeware/search.php?string=zango

Dont install anything that says Zango! It will spam your computer to death!

  24. Good idea to add a freeware library, although I personally thought the daily offerings at giveawayoftheday.com and game.giveawayoftheday.com were plenty! :)

One concern though. Noticed this on the blog announcement post regarding the freeware library:
“We worked hard to make it handy and also to filter out all that disgusting adware/spyware that some developers call “free”.”

Considering how incredibly fast the freeware library filled up, how could all those files possibly have been scanned to eliminate those that may contain adware or spyware?

The green logo that states “100% Clean. No Adware! No Spyware!” ,which is included on both the main pages, is conspicuously absent from the opening page of the freeware library and from the program descriptions there. Visitors should be told if the freeware library files do not come with the same assurances of the two daily give-aways, so they can take extra precautions if needed.

  26. I have not visited the Freeware section yet, but the few things I received so far from the GiveAWayOfTheDay.com website have been most helpful. I say few, as I am trying to remind myself to come here on a daily basis. The reminder service I got from Give Away of the Day does not remind me repeatedly daily or if it does I am not away of it.

I just announced your site to over 10,000 of my discussion group members. Photoshop-Haven Discussion Group will love the Compare Images software.

    Thanks for your service.

  27. hey I love the idea and free software is always welcome, but is there a way to request a specific software to be free in a specfic day?

Comment by sam — January 28th, 2007 at 7:10 pm
  28. The “freeware” section seems to have significant “pollution” with “free download” stuff that isn’t free – possibly some of then are former giveaways, but they should be in another section, falsely entering them in the freeware section does nobody any favours.

Snapfiles seems to be one of the few sites that strikes a successful balance – go to the freeware sections and freeware is what you get, other than a clear “promotion” of a couple of their shareware offerrings, no mismash mixing.

  30. i’d suggest putting a couple buttons on the software download pages that allow users to easily inform you of broken links (there are several), dangerous/inappropriate software, etc. Having the users assist in the moderation would likely save you a large amount of time.

i appreciate your site… i frequently scour the ‘Net for free software, and i was pleasantly surprised to see several unique titles.

Keep up the good work, folks.

  35. It has potential to be a useful section of your site. I would like it if you allowed users to submit useful programs. It would be fine if this was moderated by a real person who could verify the program and maybe even edit the description and category. I already tried the submit function, but it seems to have problems. Please make it as easy as it is to leave a comment. Thank you.
