Hello everybody.
We are sorry about the case with AVG Anti-Virus trial mode. We have replaced the software for today. I hope you will like it more.
Once again sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.
Best regards,
Giveaway of the Day project team
Then still have AVG trial mode someday?
Wow! That is reacting! Nice to Know you have big ears, I guess to go with our big mouths. Thats the way it works. Thank you.
Well, I actually came here for that specific download, and I am quite disappointed it’s gone. Of course it looks like it’s AVG’s fault, not yours, but I’d sure like to know more about what happened.
Regards.

No problem since Avast Virus Guard Home Version is free and available at their website – I’ve used it for many years and it is the best anti-virus program. It’s a little pervasive in the system, but extremely effective, and I especially like their Star Trek-type screen saver disk checker – it goes deep and keeps things really clean.
Impressed by how GAOTD turned around on the AVG “freebie”.
Keep up the good work!!
I oown loaded avg earlier, how will it effect me?
Thanks for the heads up. Probably will be a lot of disappointed people today …. but there’s always tomorrow.
AVG has a free version on their website.
http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage
I doubt it is AVG 9 but it is still good software.
I have been using it for years, but switched to Avast when I got Vista because they didn’t support it at the time.
Today, I was quite lucky that I was success installed the AVG for three PCs except my home notebook not catch up time to be installed. This new version AVG is very good and fast scans my hard disk over 1TB data. Anyway, thanks lots GAOTD.
AVG isn’t that good anyways… don’t be so sad mate!
Here are some great alternatives:
avast! Anti-Virus FREE
-Anvir Avira Anti-virus
-Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
-Super Anti-Spyware
-KeyScrambler (not AV Product, it prevents keyloggers from reading what you type)
-Microsoft Security Essentials
-BitDefender Free
Hope that helps! Those are really good AV products which are WAY better than AVG. :D
~Joji~
Comodo has a combination firewall and anti-virus that works exceptionally well on Vista 32 bit. Its freeware. The Mrs. uses Avast anti-virus on her Windows 7 and it, too works great. Its freeware, too.
Bot are definitely worth a look. Jus’ sayin’.
AVG is *not* the same as Avast, they are two separate companies. Avast, though, is the superior virus scanner.
Good call on AVG. Used it in the past, had quirky problems from time to time. One morning I got up, and it had disappeared; was totally compromised. Since then I’ve thought it an interesting coincidence that the fake.alert trojan that showed up around that time looked just like the AVG interface. I’m with $4 and #6, Avast and Comodo free versions never leave the top 3 in most effective, highest capture rate of all the free additions. Kapersky is tops in the $$$ catagory, but still no freebie. Thanks GOTD.
Hi Folks
For those of you who were here hoping for a FREE Anti-Virus software …
I recommend going with AVAST 5.0 AntiVirus
http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download
& COMODO FireWall
http://www.comodo.com/home/download/download.php?prod=cis
- you can install COMODO’s AntiVirus also for weekly scans BUT expect HIGH Faulse Positive Rates !!!
Another bit of protection I tried recently was PCTOOLS “ThreatFire”
http://www.threatfire.com/download/
which was quite good BUT instead of UPDATING it’s Virus Database - IT REPLACED IT OLD with NEW so where Avast updates may be 1 or 2 Meg – ThreatFire’s updates are 22 Meg Daily – no good for those of you unlucky enough to be on slow or restricted useage :o(
Also – I have installed Microsot ‘Windows Defender’
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx to run in the background for a Multi-Layered Defence.
On the other hand for a PAID FOR A/V – I’d recommend ESET’s NOD32
http://www.eset.com/download
– I found it solid & easily configurable.
I also run BlackICE from ISS which is a brilliant FireWall BUT unfortunately since IBM bought ISS around 2006/7 BlackICE is no longer supported.
I recently had to work on 2 PCs from totally unrelated customers miles apart – BOTH running AVG & BOTH infected with a similar virus - the FAKE AntiVirus Software Scam one – where the infected machine displays what looks like an A/V software alerting to an infection BUT their AntiVirus Software MUST BE purchased to remove it !!!
This does not speak well for AVG !!!
——————————————————————————————–
Just a quick note to the GAOTD crew – PLEASE lose the “Stick It” icon – the only function it serves is to get in the way. I’m not going to tell you Where to stick it BUT you get the idea.
I end up having to click away from where I need the mouse – just so I can see what I’m doing because
The icon just sits there blocking whatever is behind it !!!
Can we PLEASE have an On/OFF switch for it ???
I know I’m not the first to ask & I doubt I’ll be the last. Obviously you’re getting paid for it to be there BUT PLEASE give us the option.
ThanX

I was surprised to see AVG in the GAOTD email because there is not much benefit from an antivirus program for which you cannot get updates.
However, it is good to see how fast GAOTD changed the giveaway. Thanks GAOTD!
Yes there are many free good Antiviruses outthere. But I have found,if you have a hardware firewall (router) just pick one of the good ones,Microsoft Security Essentials,Avira Personal,or Avast, and then use PC tools Threatfire along with it(it almost use no resources). You will be protected VERY good .Either that,or the Antivirus with, say Online Armor or Comodo if you have no hardware firewall. Its not necesarry to pay to get good protection today.
That are you talking about? What avg?
Thankyou for an excellent service, some of your offers have been really top quality. This is the first hiccup I have seen on your daily email. I have AVG free (but was trying to upgrade to 9) and it has just been given (free) massive updates which may have brought it up to 9 standard.
Keep up the great work, probably not appreciated by the moaning minnies, but the true price of some of your goodies is staggering.
Peter Franklin
You can get AVG 9.0 for free home use. They have it hidden pretty well, though. You can get it from FileHippo here:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/
The free version will occasionally ask you if you want to upgrade.
I’ve been using AVG free for a few years, and it has worked well for me.
Another free alternative is Microsoft Security Essentials, which is AV and Spyware. It also works with both Vista and 7. http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/
You mean AVG (Full) Pro suite…That what was on offer earlier…
It was there until 8:20am…then removed for the garbage offered today…
Gotta love the unending garbage software offered here that is less able than 99.9% of the similar ‘Freeware’
Like #3 above, I came looking for the AVG version 9, but there was nothing on the screen. if you replaced it as you said GOTD, then where’s the replacement? my techy recommended AVG when I got my laptop from him a few years back, and the free version is all I’ve ever used.
AVG is pretty good on detection, but heavy on system resources — both RAM & CPU. It can really slow down a browser on most systems.
Light but good freebies are: Avira Antivir, Avast, & Comodo.
Remember No one can beat KASPERSKY.
It is really best. All user uninsall your antivirus and install kaspersky internet security 2010.It will catch viruses that your antivirus can not catch. (you can download trial version from thier website)
Also post your Antivirus in comment.
GOLLY GEE!! A mistake!!
I guess you people are entitled to one every once in awhile. (keep up the good work – it is GREATLY appreciated)
I agree with jdr1142, comodo is really good. I have it running in xp, vista and windows7 and it works superbly apart from the firewall bit in windows7. I used to have avg but in my mind they made it really hard to find the free version and then didn’t support vista. Pity cause it was good.
For all GAOTD fans: AVG 9 antivirus is as free version (NOT TRIAL) on AVG website. Go there and download. Of course there are some options not available but been using it since January 2010 and no problems so far.
Does anyone out there have any experience with Prevx anti-virus? I have read that it is the best!
Poster #9:
What is (are) the major difference(s)
between AVG and Avast??
oh maaan… i got excited for a second…!
Guy’s give um a break. you can allways go to avgfree.com and get the free version of 9. it’s actualy better than the trial cause it don’t leave tracers in your reg. after you remove it. And you will remove it cause it’s a trial and trials suck so thyere. get a life. quit ur bitchen it’s free remember theres no such thing as a free lunch…………………lol…l8r dudes and dudette’s
also supports vista and 7 so quit moanin. And Joe it is 9 you should update buddy…. lol
i use avast too. very good
I would have been a whole lot more impressed
if GOTD had bothered to check the product
before getting us to test it. What a big waste of time.
I actually upgraded to this version 2 weeks ago and WHAT A HASSLE!!!
It took forever to download and install (download.com which is usually good) and when I installed it, BAM! It was like my computer was trying to work as if it were trying to run through thick glue! My computer was so slow it was impossible to use at times. It actually froze 3 or 4 times. Finally I removed it and my machine came back to life.
What made me realize it was AVG? Because it SCANNED every damned thing the machine was doing! EVERY TIME I opened my e Mail it bogged down as it scanned my mail files. Every time I opened Firefox, it scanned everything on the page and subsequent pages. It was horrible.
I would like to go back to the previous version if possible.
I use FortiClient (www.forticlient.com) which uses the same signatures as the FortiGuard and FortiNet appliances.
It has AV, firewall, web filter, and email scanning. The only restriction in the free version is no anti-spam.
The interface looks corporate so the download is small. And as the bottom of the page, is a 64-bit version that works perfectly with 64-bit windows 2008 and 7
where is it, what are ya talkin about clyde?
Ahh man I was looking at downloading it in the morning and then a few mins ago I freaked out! lol
Well hopfully AVG gets there problem straight. It would be great if was fixed asap.
Thanxs, for your service! =)
It’s ok, I am not interested in AVG after all as they already provided the quite well free version. I don’t see too huge different btwn free and paid version for the antivirus. For those who missed AVG 90 days trial, just go for free version of Avira. That’s better, even when compare to Avg antivirus.
@10 (jdr1142): Don’t use comodo: in their privacy policy, it says that the product will send personal information to comodo if you download the product.
This is ok,thanx for the reply.
Commodo have ver.4 now IS
Guess I missed the replaced software as I had no access to gotd yesterday.
Is there any way to open my trial version?
If AVG isnt any good , as some of you say, then why is it the most downloaded of the freebies ??? I have it as well, however, just wondering if perhaps there might be a a better choice .What do the independent surveys say ??? Just wondering ???
There is definitely a better choice. AVG misses things. Lots of things. ESET Nod 32 misses nothing and uses less memory. I had AVG. Got rid of it. ESET found 2 actual virus infected files on my PC that AVG missed. AVG is free for a reason. It’s worthless.
According to Tech Talk and a few other sites after a good Bing or Google AVG always comes in the top three Antivirus programs. Free version or Paid version. Check it out you will find the info.
Joji, you have got to be kidding. I’ve been using AVG (FREE) for years and the only anti-virus you listed that is anywhere near as good as AVG is Avast, but, in my opinion, AVG is the better of the two. Oh, and Joe, The latest AVG Free is version 9.0.790.
#9 …hey don’t post the whole list and give them all the title anti viruses, they are all anti spyware, cleaners and loggers, the only two that are true anti viruses are Avast and Avira…and # 11 that answers your question as well. Avira in my opinion is better than Avg because it has an outgoing and incoming block and logger as well as letting you know asap when it finds something, as far as AVG it is very good as well for a freebie…Avast is good when you need a pre-boot scanner but not as good long term, i have used and tested all of them so trust me when i tell you all of this.
avg is a sys resource hog; it’ll suck in all ur resources.
well avg 9 is an improved version but still.
Avast 5 surely rocks, have installed it on my desktop at home and it is effective w/o putting in much of my sys resources :)
My friends, they too use avast v.5
#9 You Forgot Avast! :P
Yeah, the are many other free alternatives… :)
I have listened to many people’s opinions through the years. A large group of them believe they have found the best programs ever. This group of people defending their programs with beaks and claws. It is a little hard for me to understand why they are bellicose when others say they’ve found the best program? My experience over the last 28 years with computers is that it is absolutely individual facts that determine which program is best for the individual use. I’m super happy about that GAOTD have a basis to exist. It allows me to use very expensive programs that I currently would not dare to try otherwise. There is the big difference between full versions and trial versions. Trial versions are often very stressful because they have limitations that prevent people from testing their ideas. I am sure that most people are willing to pay a good deal of money for a really good program. That is how I have it with Pinnacle Studio Plus 10 which cost quite a lot when you do not know 100% whether it covers all your needs or not. My point is that the we can listen to other people’s experiences and thus often come closer to what program is best for oneself.
I have downloaded the current AVGfree from the internet. If you just google it you will find it. I assume this is the same version of was it a full version? Anyway I have been using AVG for years now and it has recieved excellent reviews and I have had no issues with it whatsoever. I recommend it to friends and enemies. I found Comodo slowed my system down as did Norton. Indepent surveys I’ve read put it at the top of the free antivirus programs so I’m sticking with it. I also run A2 and ad-aware alongside so I don’t have any naughties Check out No:7 Joe’s link I think you’ll find it is V.9 and it’s OK.
I have been using avg for years and never had a problem nor have i ever had a virus infection…. avg has caught every suspect file before they were able to spread their effects…. I would like to try the pro version though…. i hope gotd can get it online soon….
great job, great software gotd!!!!!
I’ve used both Avast! and AVG for years. Basically if the machine is 1.0 GHZ or faster I go with AVAST! and if slower I go with AVG since AVG has always seemed to run better on the slower machines. I like the AVAST! interface much better however.
In terms of virus catching and rescue, I’ve had similar success with both products. Too bad EITHER vendor won’t allow the free version on home based server platforms not in a commercial environment.
@Terry R.
That’s because back then, AVG was the “king of the AV Products”. Now, it sucks like crazy… :( but they did improve a little bit. :D
~Joji~
I love your site. I am 72 and on ss so am limited on what I can get. I would never have any of these programs if it wasn’t for you. Thank you very very much. I tell everyone about it when they need software. I only download what I think is interesting or that I might want to do something with. I love my computer and love to learn. Thanks again. You rock. M Morgan
Oh well. After switching from AVG Free to Panda Cloud Anti-Virus, I will NEVER go back!
Has anyone who downloaded it worked out how to switch it off? (That is a serious request for information, not just a dig at the software.) I was unlucky enough to get in early enough to download it, and it is the worst anti-virus software I have ever tried. It slows my computer down to a point that it is impossible to work on it for long. It asked, on set up, do I want to change my default search engine to Yahoo, I replied “no”, but it changed it anyway. Worst of all, it is viral adware itself, it has hijacked things like my 404 page, and throws up an advert instead (based on the 404, eg if a website called “bongo.com” fails I get an advert for a music site that sells bongos).
So if anyone knows how to switch the bloody thing off please post here, I want to be able to use my computer for more than an hour without having to reboot it!
I used to be a huge supporter of avg, but in since 8.5 they have gotten sneaky on their upgrade path tricking many into purchasing their software. I work as an IT in a good sized nonprofit organization, and we have switched to Comodo`s free anti virus/firewall,for about 2 yrs now it has protected a public internet site of about 30 public computers plus the office ones, with no problems at all. I recommend Comodo to anyone looking for a good set of protection tools
Many thanks to the GAOTD-Team for their fast reaction to the AVG flop. By the way, I think we all don’t blame YOU and your fine service… it’s not the first problem we had with AVG: The “juniors” working there don’t answer questions, their support (also for sold products) is lousy and their programs are disturbing and corrupting our systems ! These amateurs just don’t care about us users…
Also, many thanks to all the interesting and useful comments in this blog. Excellent community, indeed !!!
I alrerady used avg have for years and it is what I put on customers computers,I have had no problems with it but then again I don’t go places known to be infecxted either and if it pops up and say the site me be infected I close it out,i started out in 89 with macaffee not very good, then norton until 2004,then it seemed to not be very good and slowed coputers down,I have tried the other free ones and since I work on computers on a daily basis i see where all of them have gotten viruses and the fake antiviruses seem to get in to all of them, trying the microsoft security antivirus now on one of my computers and it isn’t bad so far norton just seems ineffective and it just slows you computer down any more but the best antivirus is also a little common sense
AVG antivirus is total rubbish, it misses more threats than any other antivirus out there, if anyone who has AVG installed try NOD32, Panda, Avast or any of the other top brand by doing a scan, you will be in for a shock at what is found on your system, I am a computer engineer and the machines that I get to clear viruses are mostly using AVG Free which does not detect them.
I second many comments here. the best AV software is Avast, hands down.
Ummm, hello everybody,
Try Antivir, ABSOLUTELY the best
AVG itself is a virus IMO. AVG 9.0 Free bombards me with adware for itself for a whole month, then sits idle for a while. When I put it on Win 7 it was blocking restore points and blocked system restore altogether. I had to system restore in safe mode. When I tried to remove it I had to download a cleaner from their sit to get rid of it. I went to Avast.
Like many here I used to use AVG on my machines when they first hit the market, disk kindly provided by the company as they were one of our clients.
But, and it sounds uncharitable I know, the more recent versions seem to have lost something, I know different software finds different problems, some miss what others find, but in the end I found AVG was slowing my notebook and smaller machines too much.
I switched to Clamwin free, seems to do a good job but no on here has mentioned it, any other users? Comments on Clamwin?
I used the paid-for version of AVG for years, until I finally lost it with their frequent FPs screwing with mine and others systems.
AVG would have to impress the hell out of me before I’d ever consider using them again – and that hasn’t happened this time, either.
What are all you people talking about?
1.) AVG free (version 9) is readily available both from AVG and CNET (www.download.com)
It is completely free and effective;
2.) “the FAKE AntiVirus Software Scam one – where the infected machine displays what looks like an A/V software alerting to an infection ”
I have seen this on several customers computers, running many different AV’s, including AVG, Avira, Avast, McAfee, and Norton.
This is not a virus, but malware; please learn the difference. Once you disable it, you can remove it with Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, etc.
3.)Avast and Avira are both good products as well. In fact, I install Avira on my customers who don’t have the memory to spare for AVG.
-Yes, AVG uses more memory than Avira, but it also has more features:
Removable disk scanning
E-mail scanning (several different clients)
MS Office plugin
And the best one – the AVG toolbar. The toolbar is what makes it my first choice for customers computers. It won’t STOP a malicious site, but it will at least warn you much of the time for any known malicious sites.
When installing AVG, I do a custom install and uncheck e-mail and office features; most people use webmail and most of my customers don’t have the RAM for the office plugin.
But anytime I get a customer with a duo core processor and more than 2GB of ram (vista, 7) I let it do a default install.
I don’t know why everyone is hatin on AVG so bad – it’s pulled my butt and many of my customer’s butt’s out of the fire PLENTY of times.
It’s not a bad product. Don’t hate AVG because you don’t know how to configure it for your computer.
Think I’ll just stick with Norton 360 then, even though my sub has just lapsed. Got the Comodo one (AV & Firewall) and AVG (Loved it when I was between Norton & Mcafee) but find the Comodo one highly annoying with all it’s pop ups every 5 seconds about sandboxing everything I glance at and it’s annoying habit of cutting off my kids networked pc’s from my router every hour or so, despite me setting everything up to stop it doing that at both router and pc level.
@Grange
Norton 360 is useless, I hacked it in 5 mins flat. AVG free edition is much better :)
For those who are advising avast instead of AVG, Avast is worth nothing. It slows down your pc because it takes all priority on your system when effecting a scan or an update.
For once, Microsoft offers a free antivirus and is very effective. All you need is a legal copy of windows and SP3 if you’re running XP. Use this one in combination with Spybot and your computer will be fully protected.
If you don’t like Microsoft products, you must use a Linux system, no antivirus needed and very powerful, but you need some computer knowledge.
If you prefer another antivirus who’s very effective, you will need to pay for it and buy NOD32.
If you’re satisfied with less, but reasonable quality, AVG is a very good choice, but remember, the best developper of antivirus systems will be the one who developped the operation system
oh right, just another interesting note to add. People who are saying that AVG is slowing down the system, might first check if their previous antivirus is completly removed before installing it. Any trace of old AV software can cause a conflict and slowing down your machine and even make it completly crash.
This is the case for any AV software, you never can have two AV tools installed on the same machine. They are working against each other
Used to have Avast free but one day they missed 3 virus which were picked up by another program that rocks: Super Anti Spyware.
So now I use that plus free AVG and of course the best friend a computer can have: Advanced System Care free version. Tried the pro version but it screwed up my registry so stick with the free.

Only just looked at GOTD and noticed this AVG story. Read through some comments and would just like to say I’ve been using AVG 4ever and am now using AVG9 Full and it is fantastic..!! All the slaggings off are without merit and any parts of AVG that people don’t need or want can be configured (turned off) very easily. AVG 9 is an excellent software.
I used AVG9 full for a while until I had fraud committed on my on line banking. Some body got through my security and drawed money out of my account. Who’s to blame? How did they get in? The bank won’t say and I’m not taking any chances I’ve always figured if it’s free…somewhere somehow some body is getting something?? Any how to each it’s own. I’m using McFee and I’m not saying it’s full proof but so far they are right in back my every movement and even ahesd of my every movement. It’s free for a year for three computers…so far I will renew when the time come.I received it through Bank Of America.
Happy Browsing to all.
