Monday morning news and questions - Giveaway@Mac? Can we do that?

Hello everyone,
Today I have some news for you and also I`m going to ask for help.

Well, Giveaway of the Day has been around for quite some time, and all this time we had emails coming and coming. Some of those emails were asking if there if we have plans to offer Mac OS-based version of our service and TBH we had none.
Mac OS X is a completely different world for us, and difficulties of starting Mac Giveaway of the Day were (and still are) significant, that`s why we tried to stick to Windows family.
Well, those emails kept coming and finally we decided to give the idea of Giveaway@Mac a second thought.

What does that mean? Basically, we will try and start this Mac version, but it will be a bit different from our regular versions. First of all, we would really need community help. You see, we can code the whole activation system anew, we can design a few additional pages and we can buy a few Macs (already did, actually), but that`s not going to be a Mac version of GAOTD but rather some frame for it.

What we lack at the moment and what we need help with is a Mac community here -both visitors and developers. We do not have contacts in the Mac world, so that`s someting I`m going to ask: do you have those? Do you know someone that uses Mac and could be interested in visiting our website? If yes, let him/her know.
Do you know a company or a developer that makes software for Mac OS? If yes, let him/her/them know about us.
We actually do check our software submit form, and we look thru our email boxes overloaded just like us.

Please also note that this Mac version won`t be Mac Giveaway of the Day immediately, let`s be realistic here: it`ll be Mac Giveaway of the Week then Mac Giveaway of the half-Week then Mac Giveaway of a few days…
/Lord Farquaad mode on:
…and so on and so forth. Some of your Macs may die, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make.
/Lord Farquaad mode off. I`m not THAT evil.
*evil grin*

Well, that`s all for now and let`s see what we can do together.

Yours,
Slava and GAOTD team

  1. I am a mac user and would love to see some products that will work for the mac users. Macs (ie) Apple is here to stay. Spyware free virus free its the way to go. I Check this site daily and find some pretty cool software, just to bad for me that it has been a windows based give away since inception. I really hope you can pull something of for our benefit also.

Thanks and keep up the good work
    My best wishes

  2. Why not do something with MacHeist?

  3. I got here from a post in the Mac forum over at dslreports.com. There are a few discount Mac app sites (macZOT, MacPromo) and one called MacAppADay.com that ran for a month. Those might well be places to start as well as the aforementioned MacHeist folks.

  4. I use GAOTD on a regular basis for programs on my Windows pc and i think a Mac version would be a great idea for my Mac as well. Maybe you could start off with once a week a Mac program?

  5. Great idea! A couple of my friends have Mac computers and then they would be able to download giveaways as well. Keep up the good work!

  6. To be honest, Mac software developers are most likely not willingly to give their software away for free because of the production costs involved. Developmental software is very expensive for OSx, so it’s rather unlikely. I think you free is a little difficult for OSx software, but you could definately do discounted giveaways.

I wish I could help, but I’m more interested in multiplatform-programming, which would run in any operating system. Perhaps that may be an avenue to try, open source type software.

  7. well #6 you forget the team here at GOATD pay for the software and then give it to us. check the terms

  8. My sister-in-law, and her duaghter just tole me to let you know that they would love it if GAOTD would offer Mac enabled software. She is a school teacher, and her daughter is a student. They use a Mac at home, and at school. They dont really like the PC-Windowds machines. As for me and my family, we use Windows and very much like the GAOTD (excluding the screensavers) offerungs, but there are alot of Macintosh computers out there too. I have been told more than once that if I ever had a Mac, I would not want a Windows machine.

  9. I am a HUGE Mac fan and I’d love to see a GAOTD (or GAOTMonth or GAOTHalf-week) for Mac! I don’t really have contact with any Mac developers, but I would be happy to try and help in any way I can…

  10. I’d like to see GOTD on more platforms too. How ’bout tackling a LINUX version after this? I’m a die-hard Linux user, and would use many of the programs you provide, ‘cept… I can’t. Even if you couldn’t find official, licensed software to distribute, you could provide some usefull GNU licensed software.

  11. Hey, I use a Mac! I’d love to see an iGAOTD.
    Bring it on baby!

  12. I would certainly appreciate Mac X give aways; I check giveawayoftheday each day and use one of your free offers for the Windows OS regularly, some every day, some as tools for emergencies.

Hope you can realize your plans for Mac soon, and wish you all the best. Thanks GAOD

  13. I use both Mac & PC. I would love to see and support a Mac GiveAway site. My 14 year old daughter has converted from PC to only Mac, & would greatly appreciate a Mac GiveAway site. She would bring all of her friends who use Mac. I’m sure once the word got around there would be an over-whelming support for this new venture. Eagerly awaiting the launch with wishes of Good luck.

  14. Mac user here. There are basic programs that PC’s are great for that Mac’s absolutely lack. With apps like Parallels and Boot Camp, Mac users have the option of “dual wielding” OS, like I do, but I still prefer using things on the Mac side. So bring on GAOTSSPAYTBD (that’s Giveaway of the Semi-Seminal Period As Yet To Be Determined).

  16. Already contacting some developers. In fact, I just dropped a quick note about GotD to the folks at LateNiteSoft, makers of Xslimmer. That efficient little app just recovered 1.8Gb space on my iMac… woooo!

  17. Great idea. I’m Mac and PC user, IT related career but not in development. You can perhaps contact the great community of Macbidouille (english version is http://www.hardmac.com/). Lionel (the macbidouille guru) can perhpas help a little bit.
    Many thanks.

Could you please provide a sign-up area so that we can be notified and/or be kept up-to-date and of the progress in this area?

  25. I’d check it out too! Got here via a BB, ’cause I thought it would be both versions (Mac and PC) so you can imagine my disappointment to find only Windows DLs. And I have often upgraded (and paid for said upgrade) off of free DLs… try and buy does work.

  30. I could use a site that has autopackage or .deb type installs for my Linux boxes, that truely have the dependencies resolved so they actually run on my systems without screwing-up the previously configured installations, and don’t require finding, downloading, or worse -compiling ;) the required resources. Maybe some files that have the required resources compiled statically so that they are ‘install-and-play’, or ‘yank-and-toss’ without problems. This applies doubly with the Mac’s flavor of BSD, as folks who have gone from OSX 10.2 to 10.5 may have found out. While we’re on the subject, don’t forget us folks out there who are still using MacOS-9.x (or earlier), because we don’t have the hardware to run OSX in any variation and get anything useful done. pretty 3d desktops are fun, but being able to surf the web, FTP files, send e-mail, and generally use functional applications are what distinguish a computer from an expensive “Lava Lamp”.

  32. I, too, am a Mac user and would LOVE to see a Mac version of GOATD. I find some of the apps you post on the site to be priceless for the things [the program(s)] do for me. There have been a good deal of comments for Mac users from day-to-day in the comments about the various give-away apps and I’ve found many of those suggestions to be very good but it would be one-hundred times more useful to have a GOATD-type service for Mac users (even if it was weekly for a while). Please do continue to look into this and please do get this idea going into a full-fledged “project” for us Mac users.

  33. Wow! That would be great guys!
Most of the time I use Windows but I also love my Mac!

  34. Great and all, as long as the Mac community doesn’t go mac-love-fest on us.

  39. Oh, yes, please please please PLEASE help us unfortunate parents with (multiple!!)art major kids whose colleges …

    “highly suggest” having a mac (which means that if your kid walks in with a PC she’s screwed because all the instruction will be for mac software;

    so that not only do we need to buy new computers while the PC’s collect dust;

but we HAVE to buy all this new software because, duh, all we have at home is PC software

so yes, please, take pity and bring us mac programs and let us learn about the companies so that we are

    not flying (buying) expensively blind!

(end of outburst. Now weeping for joy and hope)

Lol! Thanks again, for caring, GAOTD

  44. You write you’re looking for contacts in the “Mac world” — I’d suggest LowEndMac as a very popular site which may want to team up with you. Even if that doesn’t work out, its webmaster will surely give you further ideas and addresses:
    http://www.lowendmac.com/contact.html

  45. I am all for a Mac Give away too… It is so nice to know that there are other people and or companies thinking of US Mac users out there! We are growing and growing, more and more mac users are popping up daily… So Hell Yeah, bring on the mac software etc! I currently download PC software from gaotd for my pc laptop, I hate PC’s but heck it was given to me… My desktop is a Mac though, I have always said, I will never be with out my MAC, I own a pc laptop, but I would never just own a PC..Mac before PC anyday! my hubby is a PC freak, and is always picking on me about my mac, but I don’t care, cuz I know he is just JEALOUS! Hahaha :)
Bring it on, the give away of the day, week, month or whatever for macs! YAY! Yippy!! :)

  46. I would love a Mac site! I routinely download stuff from your site, but it requires me to restart my computer and use Bootcamp, which unfortunately is not the OS I use for work. I’m a graphic designer, and I don’t know a single other designer that doesn’t have/use a mac. There used to be a magazine called Mac Addict that came with a CD that had lots of fun programs and games to try out. The publisher decided to do away with that and are now MacLife or something like that, and really bears no resemblence to what it once was. So a Mac version of this site would definitely be filling a void that magazine created by basically becoming a Mac World clone.

A possibility for sources would be to look at past issues of MacAddict and see which companies were partnering on the program CDs.

I have been a Mac user since it was an Apple and am always looking for Mac software (free) to use. More folks will be heading your way because I plan to let them know. I have already informed so many folks about your pc software. Keep up the good work and looking forward to having the Mac GAOTD. I am not a developer but am a dedicated user and IT staff person. Let me know what I can do to assist.

When I saw that Evernote was now available for Mac, I clicked the link.

I would definitely use a Mac version.

  59. I’d love to see a Mac version of GAOTD as well. There are thousands of Mac software publishers out there (to the commenter who said Mac software development tools were expensive—how is free expensive? Xcode comes with Mac OS X and updates are regularly available for free from developer.apple.com) and I’m sure many of the shareware authors in particular would love the opportunity to spread the word. I know one developer personally (contact me privately for their information, please) but you could also check macupdate.com and versiontracker.com for comprehensive lists of Mac OS software and developers.

  66. Yeah a MAC & CHEESE Site, that way mac users dont have to delve out 500-1,200$ for the softwares for a MAC… LOL Sad but true whereas PC software (top of the line ranking with MAC Software) is by far cheaper, but then again so is a top of the line alienware PC as well, Mac & Me? Well, sorry i have shuttled of to microsoft & alienware.com to get the goods, thanks

  67. That would be fantastic! I have 8 computers in my home-based office: 5 PC’s and 3 Macs. The Macs are in use all day long. The PC’s hardly ever get turned on anymore, since we got the Macs.

When we have to run the odd PC app, 90% of the time we do it in Parallels or VM Fusion on our Intel powered Macs. The PC’s are largely irrelevant now. Please go for it with the Mac Giveaway site idea. You will instantly increase the number of users of your sites by a significant percentage.

    Thanks much.

I’m a Mac user and while I’m delighted that you’re adding some Mac software to the mix, it would be kind of aggravating to sign up for notifications when the vast majority of them will be for Windows software… Any way of doing a separate feed for Macs?
