Hello everyone,
I`d like to raise an important question regarding the situation with some of our users attempting to post registration keys in our forums and comments sections.
A week ago we`ve ran into the problem with the giveaway registration key being posted in our comments and forums to help some of the users with their activation problems. That key probably helped them to solve the problem, yet created a much bigger one: software developer wasn`t happy to see that, and you can easily guess why!
Despite the fact that only a few dozens users (compared to many thousands on giveaway day) users accessed these topics after the giveaway day, we felt obliged to offer him a compensation doubling because we felt that our forums and comments sections were misused. But it`s not only about the money, it has a lot more to do with the moral aspect of the situation.
Please, please notice that by helping someone with a license key or a registry entry being posted in our forums and comments section you might solve a short-term problem… yet you will hurt the project in a long run. No technical problem should be used as an approval for making licensing information freely available after the giveaway day, and I really hope that the unpleasant situation in which we are now, will teach all of us, both GAOTD maintainers and visitors, an important lesson and help us avoid such situations in future.

Any ideas on how to help those of us who cannot connect when using the Activate? Activation module failed to connect is the error message many of us are getting.
Leave a message here or in the forum and tell them how many errors you ran into, and perhaps the GOATD team can create a key for you.
I really appreciated your candor in discussing this incident. I feel like you that an HONEST mistake have occured in publishing codes. On the flip side i have downloaded programs in the past that demanded a fee for registration after i in good faith tried to install the FREE program.I hardly lost any sleep over the loss of the programs although there were a couple i really wanted to try before buying. This is a great oppurtunity to give these programs a trial before purchasing full versions. Thanks for the Site. Pat
I hope this will be an eye opener for most people. I am truly sorry to see that you had to pay money in compensation, especially when there is no direct income coming into GAOTD (other than ads). I for one respect the integrity of the activate.exe and don’t try to extract the registry keys from it.
You guys are great. I agree with you that people need to be mindful of doing things that may hurt your project in the long run.
Keep up with the good work, guys.
What about adding to the readme file the statement, something like
“The registration key that you get is confidential, for your personal use only. You shall not make it available to others in any way”?
Really, some people can by mistake decide that keys are also permitted to distribute free because of “giveaway nature” of software…
Hi I do understand the problem , I only wish that some times you could extend the registering period to maybe 48 hours. I missed my mail for a day and missed the software I would have liked to have installed. Of course I installed it as a trial version but then it expired.
… who cannot connect when using the Activate? Activation module failed to connect is the error message many of us are getting
did you know? it is impossible to “activate” while IE oder Outlook is switched to offline. may be sometime it will help to take a look for that.
If this is regarding the musical program offered recently, I’d like to comment. I visited your web site several times throughout the day all the way up to half an hour before the offer expired. Many of us were having problems activating. We sent messages to GOTD asking for help. Aside from a moderator’s response that he could activate I didn’t see any response from an official GOTD person. Not even to the effect that if it activated good for you…if it didn’t tough luck. No comment about whether or not the software would be available later. The number I saw was a partial number that would not have been useful to someone who hadn’t downloaded during the trial period. I’ve seen several instances of developers responding in person to software problems in the comments sections and forums. There was no response from the developer either to the activation problems. I think it is grossly unfair that you had to pay him/her double fee. The user helped us and waited until the last minute to do so, because neither GOTD nor the developer responded to our cries for help. In fact almost all of the comments I read in the comments section dealt with the activation problem. If you had said there was no help for it and some people would be able to register and a great many would not be able to and nothing would be done to fix the problem for those that couldn’t and the developer would not offer the software at another time–just like it or lump it–then I wouldn’t have wasted my time coming to the site several times and frantically scanning the forum and comments for assistance. There would be no help. No fix, was the official response to the problem. Then the user wouldn’t have been frantic to help us. The official answer would have been no fix, no way. He would then have known not to try to help. I guess he knows that now. But you could have avoided the whole problem by responding officially to the scores and scores of cries for help..even if the answer was there is no help. If the activation problem was the developer’s fault and he still took double payment from you…when he also failed to respond to cries for help…then personally I will not make his the program I purchase for my kids this Christmas. I watched the web site all day hoping the problem would be fixed or that a promise of a fix would be posted so that I could recommend the program to all my friends.
The problem may also occur if you are behind a proxy. Even with IE proxy settings set correctly I can’t activate products from work. Have to do it from home.
I don’t know if the OP’s motives were innocent or not, but I think all your legitimate visitors and fans would understand totally if you at GOTD (your site name is actually correct – Giveaway really is just one word) included a brief warning against doing this type of activity up front on the main page, on each day’s download page and/or in the installation instructions. Needless to say, this type of activity will kill this golden goose if we don’t all play nice and fair.
I must take the opportunity to get in a repeat of my request regarding your sister site for games … The really big games – please consider the idea of having a ‘Second Chance Sunday’ once a month…
I can confirm #8 Andrew’s comment about IE or Outlook being in Offline mode causing problems. I had the Activation failing to connect issue crop up a while back – I finally tracked it down to the fact that the dreaded IE (that I try to avoid ever using) was indeed set to work offline. I have no idea how it happened, but anyway, once I IE back to normal mode I’ve had almost no trouble with GOTD activations since then.
Dear GOTD Team,
I really appreciate you great effort for setting this site which be like a ’santa’ to all of us. Sorry to hear that you got to compensate the contributor duet to the reg. key problem. However I really have to share this out. (for some contributors in the past and in future).
GOTD is a high quality website to me. We are not just a bunch of ‘greedy’ but there a lots of professional genius too. If contributors not ’sincere’ about giving free for a day. Don’t bother. So far most of the products I dl is doing fine for me. However there are some products that have ‘activation’ problems and from the reviews most of us got into the same ‘mess’ too. Contributor should help to ’solve’ it and not just ‘ignore’. This give ‘us’ a pretty bad impression and lost our ‘faith’ in this particular products as well. Hope GOTD can help us in future when most reviews ‘complain’ the ‘reg key’ of the day.
Thank you so much
The problem stems from the clunky activate procedure in the first place, though I suppose the numbers are too big for email registration (as used efficiently and effectively on many magazine offers though).
The issue has been blown way out of proportion, since whatever program was open to everyone who could download and activate on the day. This is not a “secret” or restricted offer, to those who have been given the appropriate password.
So, other than some who were let down by the activation procedure, nobody got it that would not have been able to get it the official way.
The secrecy of the key was broken… well I, and I’m sure many others, will do their damnedest to extract keys for personal use/re-use anyway, in fact, I generally consider it pretty pointless if I can’t
I thought “every” comment went thru a moderator for approval. If that’s the case, couldn’t they have stopped the registeration keys from being posted?
I also have problems with activation, but on the second or third try it seems to work.
I find that if I cannot get activation, I use Task Manager to cancel the activation then try again it seems to work that way.
I guess I’m missing something here. I thought the registration key that we were given was only good for that day anyway and will not work after the end of the period. Maybe someone who is more computer savy than myself can do something more with it but I personally can’t get anything to register after the 24 hr period. Is this just me? If it’s not then that means that anyone dl any file can copy and save the registration, then print out the file and if their computer crashes they have the registration info to get the program again for free. This is something that everyone worries about…loosing their free stuff. Am I wrong about this also? Just thinking out loud….and wondering…
#8 & #12 is same as I experienced, I use firefox exclusively, but somehow the activation exe program rely on IE’s setting, and if your IE doesn’t have direct link to internet, it tells you [the key is invalid] (8/4 today’s example), once I connect the IE direct, it connect and validate in seconds.
I think this has room for improvement. (most people have no clue to check IE)
off topic FYI, if you have printing problem in Outlook, check IE setting, because it tied to IE as well.
Isn’t it amazing how we can hear from the admins. when THEY have a problem. When WE have a problem, they suddenly all have DEAF EARS.
“Returnil Virtual System” (9 july 2007)well activated.
Surprise after come back from holydays, in august :
“tryal period is finised”.
Thank you !
If this entry is refering to the music writng program upgrade activation messp where only half the activation data was included in the activate.exe but it was all the same activation data from the previous release of the earlier version, so those that had the earlier version had all the required data allready but those that never had the old version or unistalled the old version prior to installing new version only got half the registration data.
I can’t speak for what happened in the forum because I never went there for that instance but in the comments secton I posted only the missing half, which is useless without the half from activate.exe and stated why only the missing half was being posted (to not damaage GAOTD business model). IF any user posted both halves of the activation data then it is within GAOTD rights, powers and responsability, to censor the post (just as other posts have been edited by admins to tie an answer directly to a comment question).
IF all those that posted registration information regarding that faulty GAOTD offering only posted the missing half of the activation data and the author got upset then it was unwarrented, as without the other half the data was useless after the days offering, because the other half was in a different location in the registry and could not be logicaly deduced from the data posted. Anyway there should be nothing stopping forum and comment admin/moderators from deletng such posts after the giveway period is over or editing the posts to reflect the data was removed due to the 24 hour period had expired. I agree we should not post the entire activation data and if we do then the posting moderators that screen each and every post should simply drop such posts or trim then down to acceptable content.
I can understand the problem here because GAOTD offers trial programs to people so that companies with new products can introduce their products. Nothing in this world is free. And even if you are like myself and know how to obtain these products without paying for it, you got to work at it to get to that level. Anything is possible on the internet, but this is not the place to do it.
I recently tried to install some kind of optimization program that was featured on GAOTD. I’m running Vista 64 and the program installed but when it went to start it would not open. The program worked just fine on XP. It probably is a 32bit-64bit compatibility problem, just one of the hang-ups when you want to run the newest best OS out there. I emailed the company twice to notify them of the issue. and he
misunderstood me and offered to sell me the registration key really cheap. I told him the program wouldnt start on Vista 64, and he misunderstood, and gave me a 30 day registration key for free. If the program wont start on my OS the key is useless, But he was willing to work with me. But if your having issues with the software just contact the company’s support link and they are usually more then willing to help make the problem work out for you. And maybe just maybe you will do the right thing and buy their product.
Personally I use this site to try out the software. I allready know how to get just about any type of software and media without paying for it, and this is not the place to do it. Keep on surfing!!!!!!!!
I tried to install that music program, since my husband is a musician and thought it would be handy. When it wouldn’t install, I checked GOTD several times that day looking for a resolution…no help. I even tried re-running the activate.exe program again, in hopes that the problem had been fixed and no answer had been posted. Late in the evening I emailed the software developer, to let them know of the issue and that I really wanted to register the program in the correct time frame and I NEVER got any answer at all. I guess the folks who got the number from the forums were more persistent than I was, because I didn’t get that either.
I wouldn’t install that software now for free. because just like #9, when I get ready to purchase a program, I will NOT buy one from someone who can’t even be bothered to respond to a support request email, even if it’s just to say that I needed to get that info from GOTD.

Re: Kitty (Aka Comment #23)
You said:

FAO all:
I would like to point the GOTD T&C (Terms and Conditions) out especially number 1!
I quote:
Terms and conditions
Please note that the software you download and install during the Giveaway period comes with the following important limitations:
1. No free technical support
2. No free upgrades to future versions
3. Strictly non-commercial usage
THIS SOFTWARE PRODUCT IS PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. WITHOUT LIMITATION, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ALLOWABLE BY LAW, END USER ASSUMES THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE DOWNLOADED SOFTWARE PRODUCT.
Number 1 states you get “No free technical support” that means none from GOTD or the software maker.
However I have noticed that sometimes the software makers will try to resolve the issue outside the GOTD T&C, they do not have to, but it makes for happier customer relations.
You usually get more chance of assistance if it is a bug/fault or you post the (non reg key) fix for it, such as use this workaround… or that animation is running backwards…
this site is fantastic,
the free software is fantastic,
no problems downloading or activating
some programs are very large files and others are smaller
but all are very good and free.
i liked the space interceptor software, especially good
large and worked perfect for installation and playing
tough getting through the training session until you learn to turn off
the extras’ in video setup.
to all the people out there that cannot read or follow directions,
good luck in life.
i like the terms and conditions of this site, follow them for free
software
“TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ALLOWABLE BY LAW,” is a very important inclusion here, and FTC rules of the road regarding site claims and living up to those claims, like if the site clams to offer fully licensed software durng that 24 hour period but then fails to deliver the complete license activation code due to some oversight of their own and do nothing to recitify it then under US federal law they may be culpable for the false claim, in a similar manner where their site advertises “100% clean, no adware, no spyware” and an offering is shown to have adware or spyware or other recognised badware then GAOTD team are vulnerable to potential $50,000 per infraction fine from the FTC if no remedial action by GAOTD is taken to correct the problem like removing the badware affected offering or re-releasing the activate.exe with the full activation data in it.
I’m in agreement with many of these posters. I have had a few programs not activate, or mysteriously uninstall after a short while. This includes the music program, and a video ripper/converter. The bad experience and negative comments in the forums make me think “well, their software has ’some’ issue, and they’ve wasted my time.” Given how many competing programs there are out there – I just go looking for something else. These guys demanding compensation, wow, considering the key being there for people who legitamately should have gotten it in the first place, and given they will no doubt benefit from the upgrade purchases they’ll earn from gaotd users down the road – just makes me even more comfortable, when I have one of those programs not install correctly – I’ll think – feh – just forget about them and find something else.
To message #8 up there about IE/Outlook(and “Express”) being in “offline” mode. That’s another (on a very long list of) headache with Windows being so tied to the browser engine as the desktop engine. When it went to “offline” mode it took anything that talks to the internet through the “common OS channels” down too – very poor programming on the part of MS here. Come on, just because someone turns their browser or e-mail app to “offline” status it shouldn’t be a potential crippling system-wide blanket of non-connectivity. Applications (like Firefox, and scores of others) that manage their own connections by talking to the hardware and not “to Explorer to talk to the hardware” typically don’t care one bit about IE/O/OE’s “offline” status.
My advice, leave them “online” and make all application defaults that would open these point to Firefox and/or whatever application you use in their place. You can always remove Outlook Express and Outlook if you’re able to do so (admin rights, not in a work setting where Outlook is required, or where you can’t install something else)
I love people making money by getting others to give software away free, then complaining because thier kludgy system sometimes forces site users to create solutione that the site never does.
I love that the phrase, “to the fullest extent of the law” is well burried in the “contract”.
Guess what?
In most states of the U. S. the “contract” is not even a legal document. It is not enforceable.
In Delaware, for instance, no publisher may restrict how an end user may utilize software no matter the method of delivery. Saying “No Commercial Use” in Delaware will only get you laughed at, for example. Under law in Delware, if one offers ANY product for sale (or giveaway) in Delaware then THE END USER BY DEFINITION OF THE LAW MAY USE THAT PRODUCT _ANY_ WAY THEY SEE FIT!!! The end user is EVEN ALLOWED TO RESELL THE PRODUCT, even if the “license” says that they may not. The only solution is that if one wishes to not allow commercial use in Delaware, DON’T OFFER IT!!! PERIOD!!!
I went through this with MS and AVID, when I bought MS OFFICE PRO and AVID DV EXPRESS as a college student. Both licenses _said_ no commercial use, must stop using software when one is no longer a student. Guess what? When contacted by MS and AVID, I told them to contact my legal advisor – the AG of the State of DE. They were told that thier “licenses were, on the whole, unenforceable in Delaware. The ONLY part of the license that was enforceable was that one may not make copies of the software for resale or giveaway.
This is also the law in New Jersey, New York, California and MANY other states. CA and other states even go further – if Giveaway distributes known spyware, GOTD WILL be liable if anyone’s computer is damaged and they make no effort to remove the dangerous software or fix computers damages by bad software (look at the huge hit Sony took in CA with thier rootkits!), despite any diclaimers buried in their unenforceable comntract.
So, in short, while I appreciate the effort GOTD makes, they are still responsible for thier offerings, still must give support in some US states (especially in the case of software that installs spyware/software or otherwise damages someone’s comp), and have no control over how the end user actually uses the software offered on GOTD in most states in the US.
I all actuality, GOTD is a dying site. I wish the paradigm would work, but I know for a fact that tens of thousands of people avoid this site because of the many problems caused by bad software offerings that have actually caused harm. We know that GOTD is failing because they mostly offer the same tired stuff that is usually overpriced garbage that used to be pushed in SPAM and POPUP ADS. We know that GOTD is failing because GOTD has shown no remorse for posting what they should have known was spyware/virus, let such garbage run entire days. We know GOTD is failing because they use a tired excuse of “summer vacation” to shut down thier sister site for Games.
I wish it was not so, but GOTD needs some serious reworking if they expect to survive into ‘08. But, they worry about the userbase trying to fix something that they never addressed. Get your prioritites straight, little boys, spending more time pointing to an unenforcable “contract” tahn fixing actual problems only means that what little publicity you get from people like me (who can actually affect how many new visitors you will get) will only mean that people will be less than willing to even visit. Why would I tell ANYONE to visit here under these circumstances? I would not, nor would any rational person with a real reputation.
I say, we will be saying goodbye to GOTD by the New Year (next March, latest), unless the GOTD staff starts worrying more about following thier OWN RULES than in cuckolding visitors for trying to pick up thier SLACK.
Some people don’t seem to get the *point* about this post.
The *point* is, if you have a problem, complain in the forum and let the date/timestamp speak for itself.
Posting regkeys and such is an act of PIRACY as it undermines copyright. Yes, program’s given away for free, BUT WITH STRINGS ATTACHED. If you don’t have the same strings, then it ain’t under the terms that was given, thus, copyright violation.
And you can’t help a wrong by committing another wrong. It’s like robbing Peter to help Paul. The means are tainted, so you don’t reach the same “ends”.
Not to mention it turns a tiny problem (i.e. a few folks who can’t activate their programs, mainly a tech support issue), into a giant problem (piracy, morals, copyright, and whatnot). And as the mod said, it also threatens the very survival of this project.
So before you post that regkey, think about the consequences of that act.
In Delaware (and CA and a number of other states), they do NOT recognize registration key revelation as a violation of copyright. However, distribution of the software that uses those keys IS covered under copyright.
Registration keys have never been tested in copyright courts, and thus the feds (and most states) simply do not recognize the distribution of registration keys themselves as violating any copyright. Only the actual software can be copyrighted, and until someone distributes or uses software that is not available any other way there is no violation of copyright.
That said, it is totally inappropriate for GOTD to allow the distribution of such keys on thier website. It is NOT a legal issue (except maybe for GOTD), it is a moral issue.
THAT said, there are more pressing moral issues, such as GOTD allowing – with absolutely no intervention and despite loud protest – the distribution of software that installs known spyware (yeah, it is MORE IMMORAL for GOTD to have allowed that than that someone posted the keys to some crappy software), or that calls home (both violate their own policy of 100% NO SPYWARE) for no legitimate reason.
If you want toplay copyright cop, learn the law; the distribution of registration keys, while undesirable, is NOT a copyright violation. Second, if you want to play a game of moral high ground, get a clue – the distribution of crappy software that does not do what it claims, causes damage to even one computer when installed and used as advertised, or contains known spyware (even if you hide behind the intellectually bankrupt claim that one could “opt out”), all are way more immoral (and even more illegal) than posting a registration key.
If you expect others to be moral, then – - Be moral yourselves. Stop trying to hide behind unenforcable “Terms of Service” self-excusing garbage. Enforce the LAW about FALSE ADVERTISING. Enforce the LAW and MORAL RIGHTEOUSNESS by adhering COMPLETELY to the ADVERTISED PROMISE of — 100% NO SPYWARE/100% NO VISUSES. Then people will be less likely to feel that posting registration keys is alright.
Why should anyone respect GOTD when THEY HAVE DEMONSTRATED A COMLETE LACK OF RESPECT FOR THIER VISITORS?????
I downloaded todays program Buffer Zone pro 2.50.42.
I then went to the site to get the key and was informed that said key was sent to me via e-mail. As yet I have not recieved the e-mail containing the key. What’s up with that? How do I retrieve the key without ever recieving that e-mail? p.s.v.p. as I am rapidly running out of time to install this program!
The only complaint I have is I had a lot of good programs I got from this site that I lost when my motherboard failed and I had to rebuild my computer…re-installing windows…and therefore losing my entire registry. I have since begun daily backups of my registry to an external hard drive. I miss the programs I used to have, but I guess it is the price that I paid for being lazy and not backing up.
#32 I quote:
“COMPLETELY to the ADVERTISED PROMISE of — 100% NO SPYWARE/100% NO VISUSES”
Well not only is it (Assume he.) ranting, shouting etc.
It appears it can not spell either, “Viruses” not “Visuses”
Note to GOTD: Make a line stating it is illegal to download your licenced software in “Delaware” or any location that ignores international copyright.
(Note to all: Not dissing Delaware just annoyed at #32)
Final comment: GOTD do not make these programs so according to international law, any damage they do to your pc(’s) is actually the combined fault of both the programs maker and end user.
I don’t understand what the fuzz ia all about.
You get to try fully functional software for free. If you like it, “Keep it” if not “Delete it”. Simple as that.
The sharing of regkeys and serialnumbers is just criminal. Even in the Netherlands where almost anything else is allowed.
When I read the first postings I thought for a little while that this is a dutch forum: “Software for free and still you are complaining.”
To GOTD: keep up the good work!
Hello, I also had experienced the problem activating, but was able to quickly figure out my problem. Maybe it will help others. I have two firewalls running on my computer. ZoneAlarm and the one with Windows OneCare Live. I ended up finding that the OneCare Live firewall was blocking the activation, even if I gave it permission to allow it. I have ended up, each time, having to momentarily disable the OneCare Live firewall, but keep ZoneAlarm running. Then after I finish the activation part, I turn the OneCare Live firewall back on. I’ve looked all over in the OneCare Live firewall to try and figure why it won’t allow, even if I manually enter the permission into the advanced section. So I just do the quick off/ on for the 30 seconds or less that it takes and then I’m all set. The ZoneAlarm which is a much better firewall anyway is continuously protecting my connection (along with other security that hasn’t created any problems).
I have been visiting GOTD for the last 2 months in the hopes of obtaining what I consider useful software. I have noticed that, over the last few weeks, the software offering have become less attractive as well as the “bickering” over software choices has greatly increased. I now find that I no longer enjoy visiting this site and, as a result, will not be returning. I am saddened to see what looked, to me, to be such a promising concept be trampled upon to the point of absolute irrelevance.
this is for GOTD. i downloaded the game Amulet of tricolor for the kids. they have liked it, but today when my daughter went back to play it-she got a message saying the trial period had expired. I tried to re-enter the GATOD registration code hoping it would work. Of course it did not, so I have uninstalled it and naturally all of it could not be uninstalled. Now i will have to hunt all this extra mess out and delete it. If i had known (and maybe i should have read it more closely) it was only a trial i would not have bothered downloading it. This is the first time this has happened to us and I will be reading all the info on these games a little better. This is not GAOTD’s fault, is there somewhere in the promos that let us know when it is only a trial?
attn #39 – it never a trial. it’s always the full version. clearly you did not activate it properly when you downloaded and installed it.
and for the hempman person posting here (30/32) – you’re so arrogant in your entitlement. where were you raised? by wolves on the planet uber-rude?
Hi,
I’m sorry to hear that GOTD had any problems. I’m legally blind and can’t afford buying a lot of the utilities/games that you provide for free. And before a friend pointed me your way had to use several free programes to do what I can now do with just one or two (copying disks, uninstalling programs, optimaizing my pc’s performance and more) plus introducing me to great programes that I had never heard of or that I really wanted but couldn’t afford. Keep up the great work!!!
I live this site and have downloaded some truly great programs, Recently my program advanced windows care pro v2 had been saying that my license has expired and they want me to purchase the product. That action by the software company means that this full product was not not full or free. Does the GAOTD team have any type of solution for this situation? I have found the product to be useful and used to use their free version until I saw this pro version for free.
My download of “Amulet of Tricolor” also now says Trial period is over. Is anyone else having the same message?
amulet of tricolor – was it only a trial? I installed it on both my desktops, activated correctly….and today when my daughter returned to it, its asking for money as the ‘trial’ has expired. This is the only program that has done this to me.
Whilst aware that support of any kind is not offered in any official capacity, there are companies out there that obviously recognise the importance of customer relations, and that offering help to GOTD ‘customers’ can only build upon/increase their standing in both the technical and non-technical communities.
A case in point being the many problems BildSoft had with the registration of their product ‘SecureDNA 2007′. I along with many others just could not register the software. This went on for several days and after a few emails between myself and BildSoft customer support, they ended up sending me a version that was pre-registered!
With a little thought they turned around a bad situation into a good one, something more companies ought to follow.
All I want to say thanks! This is a great resource, we appreciate it.Adam.
Good Day
Just wanted to share my new experience.
If your Windows XP denies to start due to an error corresponding to missing HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other important system boot files you can repair this by using the XP installation CD. Just boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then run “attrib -H -R -S” on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete it. Run “Bootcfg /Rebuild” and then Fixboot
Regards,
Carl
Most peoples says that you need, other that you dont.
